DAY TWO
Tuesday, November 5
A day with the Polish language

The second day of the Week of Polish literature, language and culture in Drohobych was about the Polish language. In their online lectures, Professor Alla Kravchuk, Doctor of philological sciences, Department of Polish Philology at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, spoke about the complex issues of the Polish language etiquette, in particular, the choice of forms of address, which depends on a number of factors. Professor Malgojata Gembka-Woljak from the Nicolaus Copernicus University introduced the audience to new trends in modern Polish language etiquette illustrating and commenting on the ambiguous reaction of native speakers to the phenomenon emphasizing the difficulties which occur during their study by foreigners.

Everyone present had the opportunity to test their knowledge of Polish forms of address by taking a test. During the meeting, Professor Gembka-Woljak also presented the changes in Polish spelling announced by the Council of the Polish Language, which will be effective from 2026.

With enthusiasm the participants of the master-class learned the basics of theatrical art which is an integral part of the teacher’s professional activity. Actress and director Józefa Zayonc-Yamruz, already known to the participants of the event, emphasized that the persuasiveness of statements largely depends on non-verbal communication including kinesics.

At the end of the second day of the Week of Polish literature, language and culture in Drohobych, the participants tested their knowledge of Polish spelling and punctuation by writing a dictation in Polish. The senior lecturer at the Department of Foreign Literature and Polish Studies, Oksana Yavorska, dictated an excerpt from the book “Czułynarrator” (“Sensitive Narrator”) by Olga Tokarchuk, a Polish writer with Ukrainian roots, laureate of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The jury determined the winners among the students who were presented with symbolic awards with the logos of the universities-organizers of the “Gingerbread with Salt” project.
