About the university

Drohobych State Pedagogical University is a modern competitive educational, research and cultural centre making its input into the sustainable innovative development of the region. Being the only pedagogical university in the Lviv region, it accounts for 70% of the teachers in the region who are university graduates.

Ever since its foundation, the university has remained faithful to its vocation – to be at the forefront of the development of higher pedagogical education. The university has trained tens of thousands of specialists for the city, region and country; its graduates work in various fields – education, art, business, civil services etc.

Drohobych University has launched a number of local cultural and educational initiatives. The annual Literary and Art Academy “Frankian Country” is held in Drohobych thanks to the joint efforts of the university, the “Drohobychyna” museum, the theater and the city council. The task of which is to popularize and open new ways to a deeper understanding of the figure of the world of Ukrainian literature, Ivan Franko.

In 2023, the first Ivan Franko Museum-Studio was opened at the Faculty of Ukrainian and Foreign Philology, the former Franz Joseph Gymnasium, where the future Ukrainian genius studied in 1867-1868.

The university Polish centre is the initiator and organizer of the annual International Bruno Schulz Festival – a world-famous writer who lived, worked and died tragically in Drohobych.

It was Drohobych University that was the first in Ukraine among higher state educational institutions to start the chaplain service of a priest. Since 2002, academic pastoral care has been successfully developed by the student chaplain thanks to the university’s cooperation with the Sambir-Drohobych Diocese of the UGCC.

The university maintains extensive international relations with foreign institutions of education, science and culture around the world. Today, more than 70 cooperation agreements serve as the base for teachers and students exchange, joint scientific research and conferences, publication of scientific works, artistic projects, cultural events and festivals.

The university has doctoral and post-graduate studies, a library with a book collection of over 700,000 volumes which is annually replenished with educational, methodological and scientific literature. There are organizations that represent the students’ interests – the primary students’ union and the student rectorate.

Under the conditions of war and new challenges, a university volunteer center has been coordinating international humanitarian aid; collection of funds for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine; weaving camouflage nets; providing shelter and psychological assistance to internally displaced persons. Significant help in this activity was provided by partner-universities and public organizations from European countries, which continue to support the university’s volunteer initiatives till today.
