Participation of teachers and students in the International Sociological Project

From October 21 to November 5, 2024 the teachers at the Department of Philosophy, Sociology and Political Science named after Professor Valery Skotny and the students at the Faculty of History, Pedagogy and Psychology, took part in the field stage of the International Sociological Research “Monitoring risky and addictive behavior and mental health of 15-year-olds,” of the Mokotow Studies (Warsaw). The purpose of this study is to identify the lifestyle risks of modern teenagers, namely, the manifestations and scales of behavioral addictions of schoolchildren in order to determine the optimal ways of their prevention.

The project leader from the Polish side is Dr. Krzysztof Ostashevsky, Head of the Laboratory of Youth Prevention “Pro-M” at the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology. Associate professor Oksana Zelena was responsible for conducting the survey in the schools in the Drohobych Territorial Community.

The  Polish research group from the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology (Warsaw) held the first survey in 1984 which is now repeated every four years. In 2016 and 2020, the researchers from Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University, Lviv Polytechnic National University, and Ivan Franko National University of Lviv joined the project. The Ukrainian sample consisted of a large city (Lviv), a smaller city (Drohobych) and a village in Drohobych district. In 2024, the survey is being conducted online on the international SurveyMonkey platform.

Over the course of two weeks, teachers and students jointly interviewed more than 700 ninth-grade students from 31 schools in Drohobych, Stebnyk, and Drohobych district.

The project organizers and participants express their sincere thanks to the University administration, the department of education at Drohobych City Council for their assistance in conducting the survey. Also, to school principals and teachers for their openness and willingness to help. It is nice to note that Drohobych University graduates work in almost every school.

Alongside the survey, the students also actively conducted career guidance work sharing information about studying at their native alma mater.

According to the survey results, it is planned to hold a final scientific conference including the research organizers, representatives of the University, schools and social services in the region.
