
The Department of the Ukrainian Language is a basic structural division of the Faculty of Ukrainian and Foreign Philology. The teaching staff of the Ukrainian language department consists of 13 lecturers, including: 4 doctors of science, professors (Vira Kotovych, Oksana Kushlyk, Petro Matskiv, Yaroslav Yaremko), 9 candidates of science, associate professors (Uliana Haliv, Lesia Lehka, Liubov Melnyk, Mykhailo Panochko, Iryna Paten, Stepan Senkiv, Liliia Sobol, Mariia Stetsyk).

The Department of the Ukrainian Language was founded in 1952. Klavdiy Yaskevych, one of the first and most famous Polonist scholars, became its head. From 1952 to 1955, the unified department of the Ukrainian language and literature was headed by Yevhen Dmytrovskyi, the author of thorough educational and methodological works for higher schools, and from 1955 to 1960 by Mykola Domnytskyi, a well-known researcher of the Ukrainian literary process of the second half of the 20th century. In the future, the heads of the Ukrainian language department were: Dr. Philol. n., prof. Havrilo Shilo (1961–1974) – a dialectologist, author of works on phonology and comparative grammar of Slavic languages; K. Philol. Ph.D., Assoc. Klavdiy Yaskevych (1974–1979); K. Philol. Ph.D., Assoc. Ivanna Uzdyhan (1979–1983) is an authoritative researcher of Ukrainian adverbs, co-author of the well-known textbook “Modern Ukrainian Language”, long-term vice-rector of our university; K. Philol. Ph.D., Assoc. Mykhailo Panochko (1983–1987) is a researcher of Ukrainian sports vocabulary, a compiler of the “Dictionary-handbook of words with the letter G”. In 1987–1988, the Department of Ukrainian Language and the Department of Ukrainian Literature were united again. Since then, and since 1988, for thirty years, the department of the Ukrainian language had been headed by Dr. Philol. n., prof. Vasyl Vynnytskyi is a well-known Ukrainian accentologist, author of the monographs “Accent in the Modern Ukrainian Language” (1984); “Ukrainian accent system: formation, development” (2002). In 2018–2022, the head of the department was the current dean of the Faculty of Ukrainian and Foreign Philology, doctor of philological sciences Prof. Petro Matskiv, whose area of linguistic interest is the religious discourse of the Ukrainian language. Since February 2022, the Department of Ukrainian Language has been headed by Dr. Philol. n., prof. Vira Kotovych, a researcher of the oikonymic space of Ukraine in onomastic and linguistic aspects.
