The first department has a long and special history: from the nursing courses organised in 1960 by M.Y. Goldenberg and M.M. Vasylchyk, it grew over the years into an independent structure – the Department of Civil Defence. From 1972 to 1986, its permanent head was a well-known surgeon of the Carpathian region, PhD Y. S. Bachynskyi. A talented specialist whose experience was gained in military hospitals during the Great Patriotic War, he skilfully passed on his knowledge to students. The staff of the Department of Civil Defence included: M.Y. Romaniak, Doctor of Medicine, Professor, M.F. Nabok, PhD, surgeon by profession, lecturers – L.M. Kublitska, V.M. Polianska, L.G. Levkut, V.V. Saratovskyi, E.I. Peshkin, as well as practitioners. Under the leadership of Y.S. Bachynskyi, the department trained reserve nurses for civil defence. The staff constantly maintained close ties with medical institutions of Drohobych and the district, and in the clinical departments students acquired practical skills in nursing, first aid, etc.

In 1986, on the basis of the Department of Civil Defence, the Department of Basic Medical Knowledge was organised, headed by M. F. Nabok. In 1990, due to the new requirements for teacher training during the revival and formation of the national school, the Department of Medical Knowledge was reorganised into the Department of Valeology and Children’s Health. Professor M.I. Kuzmak was elected as the head of the newly organised educational unit. During the functioning of the Department of Valeology and Children’s Health Care (1990 – 1998), its employees were experienced doctors and biologists: Doctor of Medicine, Professor M. Y. Romaniak, Doctor of Biology, M. I. Kuzmak, PhD M. F. Nabok, teachers – M. I. Boitsun, V. V. Labai, B. I. Labai, I. E. Kopko, O. V. Vyhranovskyi, N. S. Yerokhina, T. I. Mudryk, laboratory assistants – O. S. Kulinska, M. S. Kuzmin.

According to the Order of the Rector of Ivan Franko Drohobych State Pedagogical University No. 204 of 4 September 1998, the Department of Biology, Valeology and Physical Rehabilitation was established, which included the University-wide Department of Age Physiology, Valeology and School Hygiene and part of the Department of Methods of Teaching Natural and Mathematical Disciplines of the Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogy. Mykola Ivanovych Kuzmak, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Academy of National Progress, became the Head of the Department.

The Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Valeology was created on the basis of the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Chemistry in connection with the reorganisation and in accordance with the decision of the Academic Council of the University of 20 February 2003 (Minutes No. 7) and 19 June 2003 (Minutes No. 11), clause 16 of the University Statute. Order No. 277 of 29 August 2003.

The Department of Ecology was established on 02.07.2007 by the Rector’s Order No. 330 within the structure of the Faculty of Biology and Natural Sciences. By the order of the Rector of Ivan Franko Drohobych State Pedagogical University No. 113 of 20 March 2014, the Department of Ecology was renamed the Department of Ecology and Geography.

In 2022, as a result of the reorganisation of the university, the Department of Medical and Biological Disciplines, Geography and Ecology was created by merging the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Valeology and the Department of Ecology and Geography.
