To ensure the educational process, the department has laboratories of botany, zoology, basics of agriculture, plant biochemistry and physiology, organic and inorganic chemistry, genetics and microbiology.

The teaching and pedagogical activities of the department’s faculty are inseparable from scientific work. The scientific work of the department is carried out on the following topic: “Monitoring of the state of natural, technologically altered and urbanised ecosystems of the Precarpathian region”, headed by Svitlana Monastyrska, Associate Professor at the Department of Biology and Chemistry, PhD.

The results of the research are presented by the teachers both at various scientific forums (conferences, seminars) and in publications. Every year, the department’s teachers publish 5-10 scientific articles that are indexed in the Scopus Web of Science scientific and metric databases.

The Department of Biology was established in accordance with Order No. 204 of the Rector of Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University on 4 September 1998 and is the same age as the Faculty of Biology. The first Head of the Department was Mykola Kuzmak, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Academy of National Progress, and the second Head of the Department was Svitlana Monastyrska, PhD, Associate Professor.
In the course of the faculty’s development, the department changed both structurally and in terms of staff. It was the Department of Biology that became the shoot from which the modern departments of the Faculty of Biology and Natural Sciences sprouted.

Students are actively involved in scientific research and have the opportunity to demonstrate their achievements at international and national conferences (“Youth and Progress in Biology”, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv), as well as at conferences in foreign countries (“New Trends in the Development of Agriculture and Rural Areas”, St. Jadwiga Królewska University of Rzeszów, Poland), the International Student Scientific and Practical Conference “SMART SOCIETY-2021” (Czestochowa, Poland). In 2006, the first student conference “Current state and prospects for the development of bio- and agrocenoses in conditions of constant man-made pollution” was held, which is held every four years.

The department has 3 scientific student groups: “School of the XXIst Century, Research Chemist, and Environmental Monitoring”.

The department annually holds reporting and scientific conferences of teachers and students.

The International Scientific and Practical Conference of Young Scientists and Students “Current Status and Prospects for the Development of Bio- and Agro-Cenoses in the Conditions of Constant Technogenic Pollution” is held every two years.

The exchange of experience and information is of great importance in today’s globalised world. The department maintains close ties with the departments of biochemistry, microbiology, zoology of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the P. Tychyna Uman State Pedagogical University, the Institute of Veterinary Preparations and Feed Additives, the Precarpathian Research Station of the Institute of Animal Science and Technology of the Western Region of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences, and other educational and scientific institutions. The department has close cooperation with international institutions from Poland, Belgium, Latvia, and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Looking back on the past, I would like to note that the staff of the department has done a lot of good things, but the prospects for the future are extremely broad. Relying on a young, united, energetic team, the department is able to grow and strengthen, providing training of highly qualified specialists.
