Seminar for history students within the framework of cooperation between Drohobych University and Bishop Lincoln University

In the context of cooperation between Ivan Franko Drohobych State Pedagogical University and Lincoln Bishop University (Lincoln, England), a seminar was held during which a lecture by Professor Oleh Petrechko, “How Emperors and Communists Erased the Past: The Art of Political Forgetting,” was delivered and discussed.

The lecture was organized for history students of Ivan Franko Drohobych State Pedagogical University at all three levels of higher education, as well as for students of Lincoln Bishop University. The online lecture was moderated by Dr Derwin Gregory, Deputy Dean and Head of the School of Applied Humanities at Bishop Grosseteste University.

The seminar examined the causes and practices of the “condemnation of memory” in Ancient Rome and the Soviet Union. The speaker drew attention to the similarities and differences between these practices, as well as their long-term consequences for the formation of historical memory.

The discussion involved Professor Oleh Petrechko, Dr Derwin Gregory, Dr Tim Galsworthy and Zoe Tomlinson, Honorary Fellow of Archaeology at Lincoln Bishop University.

Among other issues, participants addressed the problem of property, the use of coins bearing the images of emperors subjected to such punishment, differences in the legal foundations of the “condemnation of memory,” and the varying public perceptions of these practices.

Participation in such events provides students with an opportunity to engage directly in international academic discourse, become acquainted with modern research approaches and current methods of historical analysis, and thereby broaden their academic outlook and intercultural communication experience.

Cooperation between Ivan Franko Drohobych State Pedagogical University and Lincoln Bishop University has been ongoing for three years and envisages the further organization of joint events, including lectures and seminars.
